"Every chance I got that I needed reassurance, it was the first place I went."

Hayden Wittenborn, UNC Grad Student

Last Summer, Hayden Wittenborn realized she had an addiction to ChatGPT after using it for so long to help with her obsessive-compulsive disorder. The chatbot would give her constant reassurance and feed into her OCD-driven thoughts. Eventually, Hayden says her conversations with ChatGPT led to a psychotic episode, pushing her to finally seek help from a therapist.

Our Morgan Perry dives into Hayden's story and meets a professor whose AI tool could change youth mental healthcare in a big way and is exploring the role AI could play in mental health treatment.
