Face to InterFace

Face to InterFACE is a special edition of Carolina Week—a student news broadcast out of UNC Chapel Hill's Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

From London to North Carolina, our team explored the human impacts of artificial intelligence across industries and generations. We spent an entire academic year doing research, interviews, and having conversations to understand how AI is changing humanity.

Managing Producers

Elaine Jimenez

Executive Producer

I am grateful to have been a part of this project. At every turn, I was thinking about AI. It was mentioned in conversation with strangers. I watched videos on the topic. My ears perked up when I overhead the phrase "AI" mentioned in passing. Overall, I am very proud of the team and the product we produced.

Kathryn Dehart

Director of Digital Content

For me, getting to experiment with the technology the team was actively reporting on was such a cool way to explore this story. I’m proud of how the team dug into how this technology is impacting real people.

Madeleine Ahmadi

Producer/Anchor/Reporter

Exploring the nexus of human impact and artificial intelligence fostered both empathy and curiosity across our team. I'm proud that we reported stories in a way that reflects both innovation and resilience, centering human impact above all else.

Ben Mihailovich

Producer

My favorite part of the special has been seeing the creativity from the reporters and photographers. Because this is such a digital story, I have loved watching everyone get innovative with not only the footage they have filmed but also their incorporation of digital media in their packages.

Jeffery Davis Chay

Director of Photography

One of my favorite parts of working on this special was getting the opportunity to meet and speak with people from different fields about how AI is impacting their work and daily lives. It was interesting hearing the different perspectives on whether AI is helping industries grow or creating new concerns for the future.

Reporters and Field Producers

Kate Chapman

Field Producer

Working with a talented team to cover such a fast-moving and impactful issue was incredibly rewarding. I’m especially proud of how my reporter and I spoke with people from a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives to build a well-rounded story.

Champ Lyerly

Reporter

What stood out to me most in reporting on Roxboro and Person County was the depth and complexity of a community often overlooked. This project felt especially meaningful because it gave me the chance to tell stories directly from the people who live there, rather than relying on assumptions. I’m proudest of how the final piece expresses those voices authentically and engagingly.

Reyna Drake

Field Producer

Working on this project was a great experience. I’ve never been in a field producer role, and I had a great team who helped me learn and grow. It was so interesting to explore how police are using this technology.

Aaliyah Mitchell

Reporter

Through research and conversations with officers about AI’s role in law enforcement, I gained a deeper understanding of how this technology is influencing both policing and the everyday experiences of community members, and I’m proud of how our team told this story with intention and thoughtfulness.

Claire Harutunian

Field Producer

I enjoyed working with the London team to get a global perspective on how AI is physically taking shape. I'm grateful for Julia and the rest of the UK-based team for taking the research we did in Chapel Hill and applying it abroad.

Jess Kimzey

Producer

The opportunity to report from London on something as topical as AI was a fantastic way to finish up my career at UNC Chapel Hill. I’m proud of the content we produced and beyond grateful for the connections I made while working this project!

Brooks Stevenson

Producer

My favorite part of this experience was helping cover a really important topic in a different environment. London has a lot to offer, and seeing how AI is developing in such a vast city was very intriguing and valuable.

Julia Gilmore

Reporter

I had the privilege of reporting from London, one of the leading cities for AI advancements. I got to meet some incredible people (and robots) while telling the story of technology's future in our world. I'm proud of the communication from the team at home, despite being in different time zones, as well as the dedication from my London crew while navigating a new city.

Maeson Wagner

Field Producer

After watching artificial intelligence reshape my own job search, I became curious about how broadly this shift was affecting entry-level opportunities for college graduates. It was enlightening getting to hear about current UNC students' experiences with the job market and speaking with a Career Services advisor about how AI has impacted students' job searches across the University.

Lynlee Johnson

Reporter

My favorite part of the special was exploring the humanity aspect of something so technical. It was fun bringing the vision to life with characters that all have a connection to AI.

Caroline King

Field Producer

As artificial intelligence seems to spread to every facet of our lives, it has been incredible to see the team tackling its different impacts through months of reporting. I am so grateful to be part of such an amazing group of young journalists!

Morgan Perry

Reporter

The best part about working on this special was getting to report and research a topic I care about. I'm proud of how this story brings awareness to an often hidden but common way people engage with AI, and I hope this visibility will open conversations about mental health stigmas in the age of technology.
